about

Lyrics are by Rafi Husain, music by jon. This song is about hop picking in East Kent and incorporates many Kentish dialect words and phrases related to this activity. The Folkestone Girls of the title are the black storm clouds which would sometimes blow in from the west bringing storms which could ruin the harvest.

lyrics

Summer’s in it’s grown-up clothes
Trees in thick green coats and apple jewels
And hops are hanging heavy on the bine
Feels like it’s getting close to hopping time

But it’s gagey and there’s dampin’ in the air
Idle hoppers cotchering, wait restlessly for gaffer’s word

Oh look now
What’s this coming out the west?
It’s the Folkestone girls in their Sunday best
They’ll stop our work with their drenching gales
Folkestone girls with their black-draggle tails

The Tallyman and the binman garp
At the dark skies blowing across the fields
There’ll be no rabbits caught today they think
And the lollyman feels the same despair

‘Cause it’s gagey and there’s damping in the air
Idle hoppers hovering, hoping there’s huffkins for their tea

Oh look now
What’s this coming out the west?
It’s the Folkestone girls in their Sunday best
They’ll stop our work with their drenching gales
Folkestone girls with their black-draggle tails

Lewins shaking and hop poles trembling
As the westerly winds blow under gloomy skies
Under the dung dolly children shelter
The hop lines could turn out light this year

‘Cause it’s gagey and there’s damping in the air
Cons bells hang on hoppers’ noses, prospects of a good payday gone

Oh look now
What’s this coming out the west?
It’s the Folkestone girls in their Sunday best
They’ll stop our work with their drenching gales
Folkestone girls with their black-draggle tails
